Patient Services - III. Discharge and After Stay

Going Home

USC University Hospital is dedicated to ensuring that your stay, discharge and after care with us will be as smooth and comfortable as possible.

Discharge Procedures

Your physician will advise you when you may go home from the hospital. Please make appropriate arrangements for transportation from the hospital to your home. Preferred checkout time is 11:00 a.m. The Concierge is available to assist with these arrangements, if needed.

Insurance and Payment

We will make every effort to finalize your insurance and payment details before your discharge. Daily hospital charges include your room, meals and general patient care. Charges for services ordered by your physician, such as X-rays, laboratory and other diagnostic tests and medications, are itemized on your hospital bill. Physicians' fees are not included in your hospital bill. Each of your attending and consulting physicians, i.e., radiologists, anesthesiologists, pathologists and other specialists, will send separate bills for their services.

We will bill your insurance carrier for your hospitalization and services. We allow 45 days from the billing date for your insurance company to make payment. If not received within that time, we will notify you and request that you contact your insurance carrier to ask the reason for non-payment of your claim. If you need help in resolving your claim, a patient representative from our business office will assist you. You are responsible to pay the balance of your bill not covered by your insurance plan.

Follow-Up Care

Your physician will have recommendations and instructions on what you must do during the period following your discharge, and will let you know if or when you should be seen for follow-up care.

Your nurse and case manager will arrange for any special services, home health care, medical equipment and skilled nursing facilities you may require. In addition, Social Services staff can arrange individual/family counseling and participation in one of our many support groups. Our Social Services staff is also knowledgeable about available community resources that may meet your needs.

Discharge medications can be filled at the USC Medical Plaza Pharmacy located on the ground floor of the Healthcare Consultation Center, or at another pharmacy of your choice. If you return as an outpatient, your prescription can be refilled at the Medical Plaza Pharmacy. The Pharmacy can be reached at (323) 442-5770, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Volunteer Opportunities

USC University Hospital is pleased to welcome the support of volunteers who wish to contribute their valuable gifts of time and ability through our Volunteer Services Program and USC University Guild.
