High-Quality Care

The Obstetrics/Gynecology practice at the University of Southern California University Hospital provides quality care in the broad spectrum of women's health services. Providing advanced treatment in a highly individualized, compassionate environment, we offer patients high-quality care.

The physicians in this program are full-time faculty members of the USC Keck School of Medicine. This strong academic affiliation offers our patients tremendous breadth and depth of clinical experience. Our physicians are Board Certified and many of our subspecialists are fellowship-trained. In addition, our extensive clinical research activities place our practice on the leading edge of women's services.

Emphasis on Complex Conditions

Our expertise is far-reaching, encompassing reproduction genetics, gynecology, pelvic reconstructive surgery, breast disease, contraception and menopause. But even more so, the USC University Hospital Obstetrics/Gynecology practice is renowned for treating patients with particularly difficult and complex conditions such as:

  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Endometriosis
  • Incontinence
  • Infertility
  • Fibroids
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pelvic tumors
  • Vaginal support disorders

Using advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment, we offer some of the latest endoscopic procedures to treat such conditions, including laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic infertility surgery, endoscopic incontinence surgery, and laparoscopic staging and treatment of gynecologic cancers.

Our gynecologic oncologists are also part of the medical staff of the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and Hospital where they treat female pelvic cancers including ovary, uterus, cervix and trophoblastic (placental) tumors. Managing these cancers, our physicians employ a wide range of operative techniques, reconstructive and fertility-sparing procedures, chemotherapy and investigational treatments.

Areas of Expertise

While our practice handles a broad spectrum of ob/gyn conditions, we provide these sub-specialty areas:

Conservative Surgery – Our gynecologic oncologists emphasize the application of conservative and fertility-sparing surgery for gynecologic cancers. Such procedures may be used in many cases of ovarian and cervical malignancies, cone biopsy, radical vaginal trachelectomy (Dargent's procedure) and ovarian preservation in ovarian cancer.

Infertility – Our practice offers patients many options in infertility treatment, including ovulation induction, minimally invasive surgery, insemination and advanced reproductive procedures, tailoring alternatives to the needs of each couple. Even when performing routine gynecologic surgery, our reproductive specialists use techniques designed to maximize long-term fertility.

Menopause – We have pioneered research into the effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women in menopause and perimenopause. Managing these conditions, we actively monitor for bone loss, cardiac risk factors and menopausal symptoms. Our specialists believe in patient education and individualizing the HRT dosage with the goal of maximizing the treatment benefits while minimizing problems.

Urinary Incontinence – Estimates suggest that 10 to 25% of women under age 65 suffer from bladder control problems. Our specialists have led the way in pelvic floor reconstructive surgery. Our practice also offers several non- surgical modalities to address this condition including medications, biofeedback, electrical stimulation and pelvic muscle exercises.

Collaborative Efforts Within USC

Because our practice is academically-based, we work closely with other disciplines within USC to provide comprehensive care. For example, our department collaborates with experts in pain management to help treat women with severe endometriosis. And patients with conditions of both the colon/gastrointestinal tract and urologic problems have access to colorectal surgeons who work closely with our group.

Additionally, our plastic surgeons are available for consultation for gynecologic procedures and we offer a sophisticated bariatric surgery program for patients who are morbidly obese.

Our close collaboration with other academic departments at USC gives us an opportunity to provide care in a convenient, centralized and coordinated manner. As a result, a woman's complex gynecologic needs, along with other co-existing problems, can be cared for by one multidisciplinary team of physicians.

Broad Research Focus

In addition to their clinical practice, members of the USC University Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology program are actively involved in both basic science and clinical research programs.

Such projects include:

  • Adhesion prevention after gynecologic surgery
  • Breast care
  • Collagen metabolism in pelvic floor support disorders
  • Contraception
  • Endoscopic surgical techniques for urinary incontinence
  • Fertility-preserving surgery for cervical cancer
  • Hormone replacement therapy for menopause
  • Incontinence treatment
  • Innovative biologic approaches for treatment of cervical and ovarian cancer
  • Laparoscopic surgery in gynecologic cancer
  • Pelvic floor reconstruction
  • Polycystic ovarian disease
  • Vaccine therapy for pre-cancerous cervical lesions

Close Contact with Referring Physicians

In our practice, we keep in close contact with referring physicians, who include both our USC colleagues and community-based primary care and ob/gyn physicians. Our goal is to return the patient back to her primary gynecologist once the treatment for a complex condition is completed.

Besides communication about current patients, we offer (and encourage) telephone consultations for the physicians in the community faced with particularly complex ob/gyn cases.

Convenient Location

Situated on the USC Health Sciences Campus near downtown Los Angeles, our facilities are easily accessible within the greater Los Angeles area. The main office of our practice is housed in the Healthcare Consultation Center, adjacent to both USC University Hospital and USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.
